The Healing Power of Whole Foods

Whole foods, in their natural and unprocessed state, are abundant in phytochemicals, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. These nutrients work in harmony to provide numerous health benefits and support your body's natural healing mechanisms. Here's how whole foods can contribute to your healing journey:

A. Reducing Inflammation: Chronic inflammation is associated with various health conditions, including arthritis, heart disease, and certain cancers. Whole foods, particularly fruits, vegetables, and herbs, are rich in anti-inflammatory compounds that can help balance your body's inflammatory response.

B. Boosting Immunity: Adequate nutrition is crucial for a robust immune system. Whole foods like citrus fruits, leafy greens, and garlic provide essential vitamins and antioxidants that enhance your body's defenses against infections and diseases.

C. Detoxification and Cleansing: Certain whole foods, like cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage) and berries, support your body's natural detoxification processes, helping to eliminate toxins and harmful substances.

2. Embracing a Whole Foods Lifestyle

Transitioning to a whole-foods lifestyle may seem challenging initially, but the rewards for your health and well-being make it genuinely worthwhile. Here are some practical tips to help you get started:

A. Emphasize Plant-Based Foods: Incorporate a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains into your diet. These plant-based foods are rich in nutrients and offer numerous health benefits.

B. Reduce Processed Foods: Processed foods often contain additives, preservatives, and unhealthy fats that can hinder your body's healing processes. Minimize consumption of processed snacks, sugary drinks, and convenience meals.

C. Opt for Organic Choices: Whenever possible, choose organic whole foods to minimize exposure to pesticides, antibiotics, and artificial hormones. Organic produce often contains higher nutrient levels as well.

D. Mindful Eating: Slow down and savor your meals. Mindful eating encourages awareness, helping you make better food choices and promoting proper digestion.

3. Healing Through Specific Whole Foods

Certain whole foods have been used for centuries to assist in healing various ailments. Consider incorporating the following into your diet:

A. Turmeric: This vibrant yellow spice contains curcumin, a powerful anti-inflammatory compound. Turmeric has been used in traditional medicine to alleviate symptoms of arthritis, depression, and digestive disorders.

B. Ginger: Known for its digestive properties, ginger can help soothe an upset stomach, reduce nausea, and alleviate inflammation in the body.

C. Garlic: Garlic possesses antimicrobial properties that support immune function. It also aids in reducing blood pressure and improving cardiovascular health.

D. Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and Swiss chard contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress and support overall health.

E. Berries: Blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are rich in antioxidants that protect against cellular damage, support brain health, and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

The healing potential of whole foods is profound. By embracing nutritious, unprocessed foods, you have the opportunity to harness your body's natural healing capabilities without relying solely on medication. Incorporating a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and herbs into your diet can support your immune system, reduce inflammation, and aid in detoxification. Embrace the power of whole foods as you embark on a journey of healing and well-being.

What Are Processed Foods?
Processed foods are often altered from their natural state to increase their shelf life and enhance taste. These products typically undergo various techniques to add artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives.

Highly processed foods often include snacks, sugary drinks, fast food, and convenience meals. They may provide convenience, but at what expense?

2. Understanding Whole Foods
On the other hand, whole foods are in their natural state, unprocessed or minimally processed. Whole foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and nuts. They retain their natural nutrients, fiber, and health-promoting benefits. Incorporating more whole foods into your diet can provide a range of long-term health benefits. If you look at your plate of food in front of you can you recognise their natural form and color? This will be a good indication that you are on the right path with selecting what you choose to eat.

The Impact of Processed Foods on Your Health

Processed foods have become a prominent part of the modern diet, largely due to their convenience and widespread availability. However, their impact on your health can be detrimental.

A. Nutritional Deficiency: Processing often involves stripping foods of essential nutrients and fiber, leaving behind empty calories. This can lead to nutrient deficiencies, leaving you feeling tired and lacking in vitality.

B. Increased Health Risks: Regular consumption of processed foods has been linked to various health risks, including obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and inflammation. These conditions are of particular concern as you approach your 40s, and prioritizing your health becomes even more important.

C. Hidden Ingredients: Processed foods may contain additives, such as trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, and excessive sodium, which can negatively impact your health when consumed regularly.

The Role of Whole Foods in Your Health

Whole foods, on the other hand, offer a plethora of health benefits that can support your well-being and vitality at this stage of life.

A. Essential Nutrients: Whole foods are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber. These nutrients are essential for maintaining a healthy immune system, promoting proper digestion, and providing sustained energy throughout the day.

B. Optimal Weight Management: Whole foods are often lower in calories and higher in nutrients compared to processed foods. Incorporating more whole foods into your diet can support healthy weight management and help you achieve your fitness goals.

C. Long-term Health: Whole foods, particularly fruits and vegetables, are rich in antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, certain cancers, and cognitive decline.

Practical Tips for Transitions

Transitioning from a diet heavy in processed foods to one centered around whole foods can be challenging. Here are some practical tips to help make the shift easier:

Start Slowly: Gradually introduce more whole foods into your diet while minimizing processed foods. Small changes over time can lead to significant improvements in your overall health. Even something as simple as changing the oils in your home that you cook with to Olive Oil or Avocado Oils with already be a shift in the right direction.
Meal Planning: Plan your meals in advance and include a variety of whole foods to ensure you get a wide range of nutrients. By reducing the time frame of eating per day to around 8 hours per day and fasting with water the other 14 hours will make such a big difference in your gut health alone.
Experiment with Recipes: Explore new recipes that incorporate whole foods. This can make your journey towards healthier eating exciting and enjoyable. When sitting down to a meal try and eat your vegetables first before moving on to the other items on your plate.

As a 40-year-old mother of two, your health is of utmost importance. Understanding the differences between processed foods and whole foods is the first step toward making informed dietary choices for yourself and your children. By prioritizing whole foods in your diet, you can reap the benefits of improved nutrition, better weight management, and reduced risk of chronic diseases. Embrace the power of whole foods and nourish your health for a vibrant and fulfilling life ahead.

Environmental Sustainability: One of the primary benefits of guesthouses powered by alternative energy sources is their positive impact on the environment. Traditional guesthouses rely on fossil fuels to generate electricity and heat water, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and other environmental problems. Alternative energy sources, on the other hand, are clean, renewable, and emit little to no greenhouse gases.

Cost Savings: Guesthouses powered by alternative energy sources can also save money in the long run. While the initial cost of installing renewable energy systems may be high, the operational costs are significantly lower than traditional energy sources. The savings on utility bills can be used to invest in other aspects of the guesthouse or to lower the cost of accommodation for guests.

Increased Resilience: Guesthouses powered by alternative energy sources are less vulnerable to power outages or disruptions in energy supply. They can function independently of the grid, which makes them more resilient and reliable during emergencies. This can be a significant advantage in areas where power outages are common, or during natural disasters.

Positive Public Image: Sustainable tourism is becoming increasingly popular, and guesthouses powered by alternative energy sources can help businesses attract environmentally conscious customers. These guesthouses can use their sustainable practices to differentiate themselves from competitors and establish a positive public image.

Contribution to Local Economy: Guesthouses powered by alternative energy sources can contribute to the local economy by creating jobs in the renewable energy sector. Installing, maintaining, and operating renewable energy systems require specialized skills and knowledge, which can be a source of employment for local communities.

Examples of Guesthouses Powered by Alternative Energy Sources

There are numerous examples of guesthouses powered by alternative energy sources around the world. Here are a few:

Natura Vive Skylodge, Peru: This guesthouse is located in the Sacred Valley of Cuzco and is entirely powered by solar energy. The rooms are suspended 400 feet above the ground and can only be accessed by climbing a 400-meter via ferrata or zip-lining.

Villa Botanica, Fiji: This guesthouse is powered by a hybrid system of solar panels and a wind turbine. The system generates enough energy to power the entire property, including air conditioning, water heaters, and other appliances.

The Nolitan Hotel, New York: This hotel uses geothermal energy to heat and cool the building. The geothermal system reduces the hotel's carbon footprint and saves on energy costs.
Treehotel, Sweden:

This hotel is powered by hydroelectricity generated by a nearby river. The hotel's electricity needs are met entirely by the hydroelectric plant, which produces renewable energy.
Conclusion

Guesthouses powered by alternative energy sources are a promising solution to the environmental challenges faced by the tourism industry. They offer numerous benefits, including environmental sustainability, cost savings, increased resilience, a positive public image, and contribution to the local economy. As sustainable tourism becomes increasingly popular, guesthouses powered by alternative energy sources have the potential to revolutionize the industry and become the norm rather than the exception.

Guesthouses Powered by Alternative Energy Sources - Cape Town South Africa

In conclusion, Cape Town is a city that offers a range of guesthouses powered by alternative energy sources.
How time flies by us!

Can you believe you are already in 2023? I can’t!

To me, the last year feels like a blur – it’s just swooshed by, like a car speeding past us on Main Road.

The more we leave home, the more we realize the power and currency that the word home has in our children’s lives. We will always strive to become your home-away-from-home while staying at our portfolio of properties.

Now is the time to reflect on the milestones and how far we’ve come; a moment to acknowledge what we’ve built. And what is still to follow under the “Alley Cartel” portfolio.

Enjoy the convenience of villa living with all the luxuries of a family home while on holiday. It is hard not to say yes to the lock-up-and-go lifestyle when you’ll never want to leave. This is the Alley Cartel luxury self-catering villa living. Always comfortable, always stylish, and always brave in our design choices.

This is why we would like to take the time and celebrate our “guests” who have made it all possible in our first year at La Maison On Main Villa in Paarl.

Our diverse network of guests keeps us connected to the world and motivated to continue serving the hospitality industry.

The people we’ve met along the way, our network of listings, and you as the readers. Like my grandfather used to say, it takes a village to raise a child. It takes an incredible amount of energy and patience to build a family-owned brand.

Alley Cartel – we are dedicated to showcasing the best self-catering family holiday homes with the best locations in and around Cape Town that forms part of our footprint. And the outings we as a family enjoy throughout the year.

Time is so precious, and we don’t always take the time to sit and think or discuss this. What is important to me as a mother, what do I want my kids to see and what do I want them to remember when I am no longer around to mold them? What do we leave behind as a legacy for our children and their children one day?

Each property under the Alley Cartel brand represents our love for old styles, new designs, and locations in and around Cape Town. Every self-catering property has its own signature design, and each item within that property has been handpicked by me.

Visual African Art throughout our portfolio of Villas. Art is a powerful tool that can be used to reflect the times, create conversations, and foster collaborations. Art in our daily lives is needed, now more than ever, because it is through art that we can make life a more livable and beautiful space.

My process is very easy…. It’s organic…. Everything and anything bring me inspiration. I usually don’t realize at the moment that what I am capturing with my camera will form part of my next design. It is often that only later I will start seeing a design form – literally and figuratively – from inspirational photos I have gathered over a period of time. Historical design and old elements have always spoken to me and it forms a constant source of inspiration to me.

This is who we are, with many moving parts and a multitude of personalities mixed into one, forming the Alley Cartel Family.

FEATURE: SUSAN ELLIS - Capturing Souls in Shades of Blue

It felt as though I had wandered into a private art gallery. I sauntered from room to room, taking in every emotion filtering through my eyes in iridescent hues of blue. This was the first time I experienced Susan Ellis Art up close.

When I booked my first weekend getaway at La Maison on Main, it wasn’t just the amenities, ideal location or exquisite design and décor that hooked me - it was also the art.

This luxury Cape Town villa, located in the heart of Paarl, has vibrant Expressionism-inspired African art for sale, complementing the exquisitely curated interior design. It was in chatting with one of the owners of La Maison, that I learnt of the local South African artist who had painted the artwork. So naturally, I had to find out more.

The Story Behind the Art

Susan Ellis, a local artist from Cape Town, discovered her love for all things creative at an early age. Although she never thought of herself as a creative, her childhood is dotted with memories of designing and making clothing for her dolls. And so, drawing from her childhood inspiration, Ellis began her career as a bridal gown designer, which is how Lorretta, co-owner of La Maison, and Ellis first met.

In 2012, Ellis designed Lorretta’s wedding dress, and it was at a dress fitting that she almost instantaneously fell in love with her artwork. So it was somewhat serendipitous when a vibrant painting of a lion hanging in the Susan Ellis Art studio caught Lorretta’s eye. Not only is Lorretta’s star sign Leo, but the artwork is the spitting image of her chow, Sam.

Although Ellis had no formal art qualification, she forged her path in the Cape Town art scene, elevating her natural artistic flair, ability and passion for creating with five years of weekly art sessions at two art studios.

“I believe anyone can paint...you just have to put time and work into developing your skills and mind. We were all artists as children but somehow lost that ability along the way.”

Lorretta went on to commission various pieces, including two portraits of Nelson Mandela, one of which sits at the entrance of the La Maison Sunroom. The piece, neatly nestled beside a teal floor-to-ceiling bookshelf housing carefully selected books, heightens the elegance of this charming space.

Lorretta and Ellis kept in touch over the years. When it came time for the grand opening of La Maison on Main, Lorretta knew the element of local art was all that was needed to add those eloquent finishing touches that La Maison has become renowned for.

Lorretta decided on African-inspired artwork and now showcases Ellis’s work in almost every room of the Cape Town villa.

Moreover, all the artwork at La Maison Properties is for sale. This allows for newly curated artwork from the local artist to be exhibited for years to come, making for a potentially new art experience with every visit!

The Artwork

As you enter the open-plan living space of La Maison On Main, vibrant laughter emanates from the artwork perched above the fireplace.

Although Ellis isn’t formally trained and doesn’t attribute a specific art influence to her work, she deeply admires Abstract Expressionism and is inspired by natural beauty.

The bold cross-hatch gesture brush strokes, a technique reminiscent of the Impressionist art movement, are a common thread running through Ellis's artwork, creating a modern pixelated image on the canvas.

The ‘acrylic pixelation’ in shades of blue, highlighted with hues of orange and stone, expresses movement and almost seems to capture the vibrancy of laughter.

The artwork in the main and second bedrooms has a solitary yet calming feel to them. They exude regality, highlighting that there is beauty in strength and vulnerability.

This piece rests elegantly above the luxurious king-size bed in Suite 1 (the main bedroom), accentuating the antique minimalist décor. The stark juxtaposition of blues and white creates a sense of solitary pride.

The vigorous gestural brushstrokes resemble the bold local print and wrap of her headscarf, encapsulating the ancestral beauty of this female form.

This piece rests in the comfort of Suite 2 (the second bedroom). The dripping paint emulates strength in solitude, illustrating the constant thoughts, concerns and memories we often carry with us.

Ellis’s artwork finds a beautiful balance between negative and positive space, and the intensity of the shades of blue emphasizes the emotive aspects of this piece perfectly.

This image radiates joy and happiness in Suite 3 (the third bedroom), which overlooks the delightful entertainment/pool area at the back of this Cape Town Villa. Shades of stone and orange compliment bold brushstrokes and dripping techniques in hues of blue, interwoven to accentuate the subject's natural beauty.

This has to be one of my favorites - her soul illuminated in her eyes, capturing the emotion ever so subtly yet ever so clearly.

What’s In Store for La Maison and Ellis?

With the upcoming launch of La Maison Onrus Hermanus, art lovers can soon look forward to a weekend getaway alongside some of Ellis’s latest work, coupled with the breathtaking views of this charming coastal villa.

The Susan Ellis Art gallery has recently launched in Greyton, where you’ll not only find a wide range of African art for sale, but you’ll also be able to commission original or existing pieces.

The work of this local artist has forever found a home in my heart and may find a place in yours on your next stay at La Maison on Main. The pure love of the subject captured in the artwork is captivating, illustrating Susan Ellis’s inspiration that primes every canvas she casts color on - “capturing souls in shades of blue.”

It's about celebrating South Africa’s living heritage - its diverse culture, indigenous traditions, and rich history passed on from generation to generation.

Whether you’re planning to embark on a solo road trip through the Cape Winelands or a family-friendly vacation away from the bustling city, you’ll find an array of things to do in Paarl this Heritage Day.

But before fast-tracking your way to the five best ways to celebrate South Africa’s living heritage, let's delve into the historical tapestry of Paarl.

The Heritage of Paarl

As the third-oldest European settlement in the Western Cape, Paarl’s heritage first took root as a farming community of just 20 farmers, in 1687.

The origin of this sleepy town’s name lies in the elaborate journals of Abraham Gabbema, a merchant of the Dutch East India Company. He eloquently describes leaving the Cape in search of cattle and uncovering a kloof situated between the “Diamond and Pearl mountains”, referring to the glistening granite formations in the Paarl mountain range. And, as the word for pearl in Dutch is ‘parel’, so the town derived its name.

Paarl’s heritage is as diverse as it is beautiful, its cultural origins steeped in African, Eastern, Dutch, French, Eastern European, Italian, as well as Xhosa and Khoisan lineage.

So in the local tradition of celebrating South Africa’s living heritage, let's take a closer look at the five best ways to celebrate Heritage Day in Paarl, South Africa.

1. Visit the Cape Winelands

Source: Pexels - PicJumbo.com

The Paarl Wine Route, also known as the “Red Route”, is aptly named after its exquisite range of red wine. Paarl’s wine-making excellence stems from the French Huguenots who arrived in the region in 1688 and have been satiating wine lovers’ palettes for more than 350 years.

The Cape Winelands, which produces around 68% of South Africa’s wine, is the central hub of the country's wine business and the culture surrounding it.

Some worthwhile farms offering wine tasting in Cape Town on the Paarl Wine Route include:

Avondale

Backsberg

Calais

Fairview

Joostenberg Wine Estate

KWV

Laborie

Landskroon

Mellasat

Nederburg

Noble Hill Wine Estate

Perdeberg

Rhebokskloof

Ridgeback

Simonsvlei

Under Oaks

Vendome

Vondeling

Windmeul Kelder

And in surrounding areas:

Tokara

Boschendal

La Motte

Leopards Leap

Mitre’s Edge

Cape Town wine tasting prices in the region vary, starting at around R65 per person; however, there are also various wine/food pairing options, from nougat, cheese or biltong, to delectable three-course meals.

Bringing the whole family? Not to worry. Most wine farms have outdoor activities or play areas for the kids, making it a great family friendly day out.

2. Spice Things Up

Source: Pexels - Karolina Grabowska

This one is for the foodies! The Spice Route, a farm located at the bottom of Paarl mountain, is just 45 minutes drive from Cape Town. It's a delightful way to experience Paarl as a family, with something to indulge every palette.

Spice Route derives its name from the Dutch East India Company, which used the Cape Colony as a stopover on its way to gather spices from the East. So, if you want to tuck into some of the most flavorful local culinary delights, Spice Route is definitely one of the top things to do in Paarl this Heritage Day.

With 13 artisanal stores and restaurants to choose from, the most challenging part of your visit to the Spice Route will be choosing which restaurant to dine at first.

This wine/food/chocolate lover's paradise in southern Paarl boasts a beer garden, various distilleries and farm-style bistros serving up an assortment of delectable dishes made with locally sourced produce.

My go-to has to be the Parma ham and rocket thin-crust pizza drizzled with Banhoek chilli oil at La Grapperia, accompanied by a Wilderer G&T or CBC craft beer on tap. It also has a kiddies menu and is conveniently situated opposite the play area, allowing you to enjoy views of Table mountain over 70km away while still being able to keep an eye on the kids.

Other excellent dining options include:

Brenda’s Deli (preserves and jam)

Jewell’s Restaurant

Barley and Biltong

CBC brewery, Wilderer Distillery and Spice Route Wines (small batch wines from the Swartland area) offers great Cape Town wine tastings, as well as craft beer and gin tastings, ranging from R35 to R75, while chocolate tasting at De Villiers Café starts at just R30.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the 50m track on the Hero Adventure Trail. It's important to note, whether you intend to run, hike or bike, you’ll need to register and buy a day pass to enjoy views of the vineyards and olive farms.

3. Uncover the Natural Beauty of Paarl’s Nature Reserve

The Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve (CWBR), nestled in the Cape Floral Kingdom, is roughly 40 kilometers or a mere two-hour drive east of Cape Town. It officially became South Africa’s fifth biosphere reserve, and a UNESCO world heritage site in South Africa, in September 2007 - all 322,032 hectares of it!

It boasts four beautiful nature reserves - the Greater Simonsberg Conservancy, Limietberg, Mont Rochelle and Jonkershoek. Rich in biodiversity, the Cape Fold Mountains are home to 20% of all plant species in Africa.

You’ll discover world-class vineyards, small farming communities and cozy historic towns in the surrounding areas. At the same time, outdoor lovers can enjoy basking in the exquisite sights of deep river valleys, spectacular flora and fauna (known for fynbos, leopards, cape eagle owls, caracals and klipspringers), forests and mountain ranges.

Lying in the Du Toitskloof Mountains close to Paarl, Limietberg Nature Reserve has nine tranquil nature trails perfect for hiking enthusiasts keen to catch a glimpse of the Cape Sugarbird and Protea Canary.

The Tweede Tol picnic area makes for a perfect family friendly outing. It's best to book in advance or get there early, as the entrance is limited to 120 people per day. There is a conservation fee of R30 for children and R50 for adult day passes.

Outdoor activities start at R50 per adult and R30 per child and include hiking, angling, river rafting and kayaking while camping costs R180 during off-peak and R460 during peak season.

Paarl is steeped in rich cultural heritage and, believe it or not, has a monument commemorating one of South Africa’s official languages. Afrikaans Taal Monument sits at the foot of Paarl Mountain atop Paarl Rock. It was designed by architect Jan van Wijk, the opening dating back to October 10, 1975.

From the top, you’ll not only be able to take in the breathtaking views of Paarl but Table Mountain, Hottentots Holland and Stellenbosch mountain ranges in the distance.

Feeling peckish? Enjoy a bite to eat at the coffee shop or feast your eyes on various Afrikaans artworks exhibited in the open-air gallery. The picnic area has playgrounds and plenty of outdoor activities to keep the whole family amused, not to mention that it has some of the best downhill biking and hiking trails Cape Town has to offer.

Couples and solo travelers can enjoy a night under Paarl's starry skies on a full moon/stargazing picnic or unwind at a concert in the Garden Theatre or Amphitheatre. Or why not get the best of both worlds - visit the Garden Theatre and get free entrance to Taal Monument!

Entrance fees range from R40 for adults to R10 for kids under six, although tour group prices are negotiable if requested in writing and booked in advance. It’s open from Monday to Sunday between 8:00 and 16:45, except for Christmas and New Year's Day - bookings can be made online via Computicket or at the gate.
5. Take a Walk Down Memory Lane

Source: Paarl-wellington.co.za

The Paarl Historical Walking Tour is an architectural fundi’s delight and is one of the most memorable things to do in Paarl!

Although some historic buildings have been modernized, you’ll discover Paarl’s heritage interlaced in its architecture. Scattered along Paarl’s 12km main road, you’ll find immaculately preserved buildings showcasing Cape Dutch, Victorian, Edwardian, Georgian and Art Deco influences.

The Press Building, also known as the Dutch Renaissance Revival, is one of the most unique historic buildings on the walk - you can’t miss its distinct turrets and thatch roof.

Toringkerk, or “Tower Church” dates back to 1911 and is one of the most renowned buildings in Paarl. Its neo-Gothic grandeur is reflected in its architectural features such as it rose windows and 57m tall tower, one of the tallest in South Africa.

Protea Bioscope or Cinema is an Art Deco masterpiece. It dates back to 1939 and still houses some original artefacts, such as a 1927 Peerless Magnarc vintage cinema projector - rumor has it there’s also an original Volvo ad on film in the archives.

And for art lovers, the Hout Street Gallery, de Kraal Gallery and Gallery 88 are three of the more well-known of the town's many art galleries on the walking tour. The Jack Meyer Art Centre and Kate van Putten’s porcelain ceramic studio, located just off the main road, are also worth checking out.

One last historic building worth a mention is La Maison on Main, located just next door to the Het Gesticht museum, which dates back to the 1900s. Owners Mark and Loretta Alley transformed this hidden gem into one of the most charming boutique accommodation Paarl has to offer while still honoring its heritage. The results - breathtaking.

If you’re looking for family friendly self catering accommodation in Paarl South Africa, La Maison on Main offers all the amenities and comfort of home, conveniently located in the heart of Paarl. La Maison on Main is listed on all secure booking sites, such as Airbnb, Booking.com, Safarinow.com, Places, SA-venues.com, Capestay.com, Booknow.co.za, Afristay, Trivago, Sleeping-out and Lekkerslaap, and for ease of booking and exclusive offers, simply book directly with the hosts.

Before & After: Heritage House Gets a Modern Facelift | Main Road Paarl Cape Winelands

After doing a bit of research I found this rough diamond on the Main Road of Paarl next to the Hetgestict Museum. I could see the potential that this old heritage home had to offer with personality and character. The German family came back to me roughly 4 months later ready to sell. At this point, I was jumping up and down in front of my husband Mark until he said yes to my crazy passion for hospitality! We ended up buying the property end of 2020.

The property is approximately 1000 square meters and consists of a double-story building housing 2 apartments. We started the renovation on the 5th of January 2021. The property was dated back to the early 1900s, and it was time to go back to the bones of the home and make it more functional with a touch of modern design. The exterior of the home had potential and with Heritage Western Cape we couldn't touch the outside of the home too much, nor would we as it was the bones we fell in love with after all.

When we walked in through the front entrance the first thing that was noticeable was carpet throughout the 1st floor where the German family lived and old damaged wooden floors on the ground level as they had tenants in and out over the last 50 years.

We lifted sections of the carpeting to see what we had to work with as we really wanted to be able to keep the original wooden floor because it represents the history of the home. We then brought in a structural engineer to look at removing some walls and replacing all windows with floor-to-ceiling windows to bring in more natural light.

The contractors started by replacing all plumbing and electrical throughout the property. Walls were removed and structural work got going inside while the back yard was nonexistent with a slope towards the home, so we had to get levels in place and design the layout keeping the 8meter lap pool in mind we needed to add with privacy in mind.

As we wanted to keep the character of the property, we decided to do a white and grey marble tile on the floor to break up the wood tones. Off the entrance, it was important for me to have a space where guests could relax with a glass of wine in hand and just be. I am a big reader and wanted to add some characteristics to the property that reflected who we are as owners. So we did custom bookshelves in the mudroom to showcase the selection of books and just a tranquil space as you enter.

One of the best features of this living room is the original fireplace. We opened it up and added a cast iron unit to pronounce the space a bit. Removing the wall between the lounge and bathroom at the time to create a more open living space between the lounge and dining area also helped to create more square footage for the new kitchen.

The original floorplan had an eating area off the kitchen to the back of the house. It was its own space but wasn't open to the rest of the home and seemed small and dark hence us flipping the floor layout with the kitchen in the front and the family bathroom to the back. What we then did was to remove the scullery wall to create a 3rd bedroom instead and ended up extending the hallway and adding a back door to the ground floor unit leading to the private courtyard. The small area under the old staircase was enlarged to fit in a new guest toilet for easy access from the outside entertainment area.

In the kitchen, we added the same marble tile but on a bigger scale and went all white on the cabinets to complement the transition from old to new. As we had limited square footage, we opted not to put uppers everywhere and instead went for a more modern black metal display cabinet next to the kitchen window to create more of an airy feel.

This project was completed over a 10-month period and in the end, I would not change anything as the flow of the space we created works perfectly for long-stay holiday rentals. We cater to international guests wanting to book a holiday rental that they can call home year after year. We have been so blessed to have guests from all over staying with us and just enjoying the space we created as a family-friendly holiday destination.

We will be expanding our footprint in the hospitality industry by adding more properties to our portfolio. So, stay tuned to this channel for more renovations to follow.

Why Cape Town should be your next Long Stay Holiday Destination | Holiday Long Term Rentals

Cape Town regularly gets voted one of the world's greatest cities. With so much to see and do and no shortage of long stay holiday accommodation with hotels, b&b, guest houses, and Airbnb you will be spoilt for choice.

Speaking with guests from all over the world staying with us at our 3-bedroom self catering Villa in Paarl, La Maison On Main [www.lmom.co.za] we normally identify 3 categories of tourists.

Category 1 | The tourist that loves our beaches and mountains.

Category 2 |The tourist that loves the rich culture, art, and history of South Africa.

Category 3 |The tourist that is here to experience our food and wine.

With Cape Town’s creative and culinary culture still thriving in the city. The maturity and diversity of the food here have given the city a well-earned reputation. Local gastronomy has an authentic, homegrown identity, influenced by the global provenance-driven, farm-to-fork movement. So, let’s start in Cape Town and work our way to Franschhoek with a great combination of wine and food.

Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate | is part of the first wine-producing estates in South Africa, dating back to the mid-1600s. Its unique position means that its vines benefit from the cool sea breezes, providing natural acidity and brilliant aging ability, as well as Cape Town’s Mediterranean climate, with its rainy winters and long, dry summers. Also, the home of Blockhouse Kitchen, La Grotto Ristorante, and the Bike Park to entertain the kids and their famous Heritage Market. And while you are in the Constantia Valley I would also recommend you visit Beau Constantia & La Colombe Restaurant.

The Test Kitchen & The Pot Luck Club |at TTK you will find Chef Luke Dale Roberts synonymous with the finest, most creative, and innovative cuisine in Africa. With TTK picked as the country’s best restaurant and one of the world’s top 50. The Pot Luck Club also under the management of British-born Chef Luke Dale Roberts favours sharing plates that evoke an American-style pot luck dinner from the 1950s. Both restaurants are located in the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock, Cape Town.

Kyoto Garden Restaurant | an award-winning Japanese restaurant. This shrine to Japanese cuisine offers much more than sushi and sashimi. At Kyoto Garden, fresh seafood is the specialty, with top-quality, unusual ingredients sourced from around the world. Kyoto also boasts South Africa’s largest collection of Japanese whisky and is renowned for authentic cocktails, including the popular Dirty Ninja Saketini. Also awarded the best Seafood Restaurant in Cape Town.

Delaire Graff Estate| known as the Jewel of the Cape Winelands. Here you will find wine, art, and cuisine in their many forms. Positioned atop the Helshoogte Pass ranked one of the most prestigious wineries in the world. Also, home of Indochine Restaurant with an Afro-Asian menu designed by Head Chef, Virgil Kahn and Delaire Graff Restaurant with seasonal bistro-chic dishes with a South African twist.

For the Art Lover visiting the estate, you will get to experience the owner's handpicked private collection of over 400 pieces of art and sculptures.

Babylonstoren| we would recommend that you block out at least half a day to visit the Estate. Known to be one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms set at the foot of Simonsberg in the Franschhoek Wine Valley with fine food and wine. Make sure to book a tour in advance so that you get to experience the estate in full.

Driving from Cape Town to the Winelands you will find at least 17 different wine routes and we are so proud to say that Paarl has been rated as one of the favorites time and time again. And 15 minutes away in Franschhoek you will get to visit some of South Africa’s top restaurants and art galleries. Full of history and tradition so you will need at least a 5-day itinerary to experience the Cape Winelands.

I cannot stress this enough. Yes, we want easy access to all the best locations, restaurants & tourist attractions around but do not want to pay R20 000 a night as a family of four when booking vacation rentals. How we get around this is to find the most central location that has all our day trip activities within 10 - 50km. Think of what is important to you like wine estates, restaurants, antique shops, art galleries, and fun activities for the kids. Then you place them out on a map and find a self catering holiday home on Airbnb that is perfectly located away from all the major cities but close enough (10-50km) for a day trip out.

3 – PRIVACY

To us as a family our privacy and quiet time are important. When we go out and about, we are between people 70% of the day but when we get home, we want quality time with our kids and just disconnect.

Will I have exclusive use of the property? Will there be any other guests using the facilities of the property? Will I have access to a maid on a daily base even if at an added charge?

These are important questions when we search for private holiday rentals on booking sites like Airbnb.

4 – FREEDOM, LUXURY & SPACE

Booking a self catering villa is all about having your own space and not having to share it with anyone. Complete freedom to do what works for you as a family. You have access to a fully equipped kitchen so that you can cook meals for your family on days you do not want to go out. Remember that your accommodation is the base of your holiday from which you can engage in any activities and destination.

5 – DAY TRIPS WITH FLEXIBILITY OF LOCATION

We like to plan day trips so that each family member gets a WOW Day during our trip. So, things I would look at will be: do we have easy access to major roads like the N1. How long will the traveling time be going and coming back? I will then start planning the day trips as follow:

Day 1 will be close to home like Franschhoek & Helshoogte so that daddy can get his fix on local food & Wine (Tokara / Boschendal / Babylonstoren / Delaire Graff). For dinner, we would pick a local’s restaurant like Pappa Grappa on our way back to Paarl. The food is great and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the kids want to go back year after year.

Day 2 will be early morning surfing in Muizenburg at the Shurfshack Surfschool for the kids followed by lunch in Simon’s Town visiting the Penguin Colony with early dinner in Fish Hoek.

Day 3 will be a rest day where we can walk down the historical main road for lunch at Giovanni on Laborie Estate and dinner at Noop Restaurant on Main. Kids can enjoy the day in the pool and mommy get to catch up on some reading.

Day 4 will be driving to Constantia Uitsig for a fun-filled day at the Bike Park for the kids while Mark & myself can enjoy a quiet table at the famous Blockhouse Kitchen for lunch. Take a slow drive back via the V&A Waterfront for dinner.

Day 5 will be a day out in nature, so we go hiking up Paarl Rock and end of the afternoon on a quad bike trail at Rhebokskloof.

Yes, we have some of the most amazing tourist attractions around us but visiting the local spots makes the trip so much more special. As you go back year after year, you will be greeted by your first name and feel accepted into the “local family” if I can call it that.

To make all of this possible for our guests we created La Maison On Main that’s located on the Main Road of Paarl in a 1900’s home that’s a prime location and walking distance to restaurants and shops. It is private and has all the trimmings a family will need while on holiday.

I will be adding more detailed blog articles on our day trips out so that you as a guest can make a more informed decision about what you might like to add to your next trip while staying with us at La Maison On Main.
