Reservations and arrival

Q: How do I book my stay at La Maison On Main?
A: Either directly with us on www.lmom.co.za or via a booking site like Airbnb / Booking.com / Lekkerslaap etc.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?
A: Reservations are only considered canceled if received in writing and confirmed by the Owners in writing.
Reservations canceled less than 7 days before arrival carry a 100% cancellation fee on the total booking value.
In the event of premature departure, the full extent of the stay, as originally booked and confirmed, will be charged. If a “no show” occurs, a 100% cancellation fee will apply, and no refund will be given.

Q: What are the check-in and check-out times?
A: Check-in time at 14h00 / Check-out time 10h00 (taking note that special arrangements can be made directly with the Owners if we have no other bookings on that specific date)

Q: How do we get the keys for the villa?
A: Lockbox code will be supplied on the day of Check-in at 13h00 / Alternatively, the Owners will do a check-in with you at 14h00 to answer any questions you might have.

Q: Can we arrange airport pickup?
A: Yes, at an additional fee (email us at info@lmom.co.za, and we can get more details to quote you accordingly).

Q: Is La Maison On Main suitable for children?
A: Children are welcome at La Maison On Main. Depending on the kids' ages, the owners will assist with camping cot, feeding chair, pool toys, etc.

Q: What is included in the self-catering kitchen?
A: The fridge comes stocked with still & sparkling water and milk to get your coffee station going. As the listing is fully self-catering, we leave the shopping to our guests.

Q: Are linens and towels provided?
A: Bed linen and a selection of bathroom towels are provided. You will also find pool towels in the bathroom.

Q: Do you offer Wi-Fi, and is there a Smart TV?
A: Yes, the property has Wi-Fi and a Smart TV in the lounge.

Q: Is there backup power in case of loadshedding?
A: Yes, we have you covered with loadshedding at the property on essentials like plugs and lights.

Q: Is there secure parking available at the property?
A: Yes, you have 2 parking spots off the Main Road in front of the Villa to offload. And once you are settled in, you can move your rental to the back courtyard for secure parking at night.

Q: Can I add another person to the reservation at a later stage?
A: Yes, we can take up to 6 people in the Villa, and you will be charged R2000 for any additional guest that was not part of the initial booking.

Q: Is the villa within walking distance of shops and restaurants?
A: We are within walking distance of Woolworths & Spar for groceries / Restaurants like Noop, Zuus (Greek), Kapstadt Brauhaus, and Grande Roche / Roodeberg Pharmacy etc.

Q: Can you help arrange local tours or wine tastings?
A: The villa has brochures on activities as well as Wine Farm coffee table books, both for Paarl & Franschhoek, so you will have plenty to choose from.

Q: What are some must-see attractions near La Maison On Main?
A: Depending on your fitness level, I would highly recommend Paarl Trails network, which offers over 200km of mixed-use paths for mountain biking / take a hike up Paarl Rock / visit Babel at Babylonstoren for the foodies (this is a full day trip on its own) / Franschhoek Wine Tram for the wine lovers / Ashia Cheetah Center / Fairview Wine & Cheese Farm. And so this list can go on for days. I would say pop us an email on info@lmom.co.za giving us more details, and we can guide you on where to go and what to do.

Q: What is the best way to get around the Winelands?
A: I would personally hire an SUV, as you then have more options on where you can go with the luxury of space and air conditioning.

It felt as though I had wandered into a private art gallery. I sauntered from room to room, taking in every emotion filtering through my eyes in iridescent hues of blue. This was the first time I experienced Susan Ellis Art up close.

When I booked my first weekend getaway at La Maison on Main, it wasn’t just the amenities, ideal location or exquisite design and décor that hooked me - it was also the art.

This luxury Cape Town villa, located in the heart of Paarl, has vibrant Expressionism-inspired African art for sale, complementing the exquisitely curated interior design. It was in chatting with one of the owners of La Maison, that I learnt of the local South African artist who had painted the artwork. So naturally, I had to find out more.

The Story Behind the Art

Susan Ellis, a local artist from Cape Town, discovered her love for all things creative at an early age. Although she never thought of herself as a creative, her childhood is dotted with memories of designing and making clothing for her dolls. And so, drawing from her childhood inspiration, Ellis began her career as a bridal gown designer, which is how Lorretta, co-owner of La Maison, and Ellis first met.

In 2012, Ellis designed Lorretta’s wedding dress, and it was at a dress fitting that she almost instantaneously fell in love with her artwork. So it was somewhat serendipitous when a vibrant painting of a lion hanging in the Susan Ellis Art studio caught Lorretta’s eye. Not only is Lorretta’s star sign Leo, but the artwork is the spitting image of her chow, Sam.

Although Ellis had no formal art qualification, she forged her path in the Cape Town art scene, elevating her natural artistic flair, ability and passion for creating with five years of weekly art sessions at two art studios.

“I believe anyone can paint...you just have to put time and work into developing your skills and mind. We were all artists as children but somehow lost that ability along the way.”

Lorretta and Ellis kept in touch over the years. When it came time for the grand opening of La Maison on Main, Lorretta knew the element of local art was all that was needed to add those eloquent finishing touches that La Maison has become renowned for.

Lorretta decided on African-inspired artwork and now showcases Ellis’s work in almost every room of the Cape Town villa.

The Artwork

As you enter the open-plan living space of La Maison On Main, vibrant laughter emanates from the artwork perched above the fireplace.

Although Ellis isn’t formally trained and doesn’t attribute a specific art influence to her work, she deeply admires Abstract Expressionism and is inspired by natural beauty.

The bold cross-hatch gesture brush strokes, a technique reminiscent of the Impressionist art movement, are a common thread running through Ellis's artwork, creating a modern pixelated image on the canvas.

The ‘acrylic pixelation’ in shades of blue, highlighted with hues of orange and stone, expresses movement and almost seems to capture the vibrancy of laughter.

The artwork in the main and second bedrooms has a solitary yet calming feel to them. They exude regality, highlighting that there is beauty in strength and vulnerability.

This piece rests elegantly above the luxurious king-size bed in Suite 1 (the main bedroom), accentuating the antique minimalist décor. The stark juxtaposition of blues and white creates a sense of solitary pride.

The vigorous gestural brushstrokes resemble the bold local print and wrap of her headscarf, encapsulating the ancestral beauty of this female form.

This piece rests in the comfort of Suite 2 (the second bedroom). The dripping paint emulates strength in solitude, illustrating the constant thoughts, concerns and memories we often carry with us.

Ellis’s artwork finds a beautiful balance between negative and positive space, and the intensity of the shades of blue emphasizes the emotive aspects of this piece perfectly.

This image radiates joy and happiness in Suite 3 (the third bedroom), which overlooks the delightful entertainment/pool area at the back of this Cape Town Villa. Shades of stone and orange compliment bold brushstrokes and dripping techniques in hues of blue, interwoven to accentuate the subject's natural beauty.

This has to be one of my favorites - her soul illuminated in her eyes, capturing the emotion ever so subtly yet ever so clearly.

My go-to has to be the Parma ham and rocket thin-crust pizza drizzled with Banhoek chilli oil at La Grapperia, accompanied by a Wilderer G&T or CBC craft beer on tap. It also has a kiddies menu and is conveniently situated opposite the play area, allowing you to enjoy views of Table mountain over 70km away while still being able to keep an eye on the kids.

CBC brewery, Wilderer Distillery and Spice Route Wines (small batch wines from the Swartland area) offers great Cape Town wine tastings, as well as craft beer and gin tastings, ranging from R35 to R75, while chocolate tasting at De Villiers Café starts at just R30.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the 50m track on the Hero Adventure Trail. It's important to note, whether you intend to run, hike or bike, you’ll need to register and buy a day pass to enjoy views of the vineyards and olive farms.

3. Uncover the Natural Beauty of Paarl’s Nature Reserve

The Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve (CWBR), nestled in the Cape Floral Kingdom, is roughly 40 kilometers or a mere two-hour drive east of Cape Town. It officially became South Africa’s fifth biosphere reserve, and a UNESCO world heritage site in South Africa, in September 2007 - all 322,032 hectares of it!

It boasts four beautiful nature reserves - the Greater Simonsberg Conservancy, Limietberg, Mont Rochelle and Jonkershoek. Rich in biodiversity, the Cape Fold Mountains are home to 20% of all plant species in Africa.

You’ll discover world-class vineyards, small farming communities and cozy historic towns in the surrounding areas. At the same time, outdoor lovers can enjoy basking in the exquisite sights of deep river valleys, spectacular flora and fauna (known for fynbos, leopards, cape eagle owls, caracals and klipspringers), forests and mountain ranges.

Lying in the Du Toitskloof Mountains close to Paarl, Limietberg Nature Reserve has nine tranquil nature trails perfect for hiking enthusiasts keen to catch a glimpse of the Cape Sugarbird and Protea Canary.

The Tweede Tol picnic area makes for a perfect family friendly outing. It's best to book in advance or get there early, as the entrance is limited to 120 people per day. There is a conservation fee of R30 for children and R50 for adult day passes.

Outdoor activities start at R50 per adult and R30 per child and include hiking, angling, river rafting and kayaking while camping costs R180 during off-peak and R460 during peak season.

4. Make It Monumental

Paarl is steeped in rich cultural heritage and, believe it or not, has a monument commemorating one of South Africa’s official languages. Afrikaans Taal Monument sits at the foot of Paarl Mountain atop Paarl Rock. It was designed by architect Jan van Wijk, the opening dating back to October 10, 1975.

From the top, you’ll not only be able to take in the breathtaking views of Paarl but Table Mountain, Hottentots Holland and Stellenbosch mountain ranges in the distance.

Feeling peckish? Enjoy a bite to eat at the coffee shop or feast your eyes on various Afrikaans artworks exhibited in the open-air gallery. The picnic area has playgrounds and plenty of outdoor activities to keep the whole family amused, not to mention that it has some of the best downhill biking and hiking trails Cape Town has to offer.

Couples and solo travelers can enjoy a night under Paarl's starry skies on a full moon/stargazing picnic or unwind at a concert in the Garden Theatre or Amphitheatre. Or why not get the best of both worlds - visit the Garden Theatre and get free entrance to Taal Monument!

5. Take a Walk Down Memory Lane

The Paarl Historical Walking Tour is an architectural fundi’s delight and is one of the most memorable things to do in Paarl!

Although some historic buildings have been modernized, you’ll discover Paarl’s heritage interlaced in its architecture. Scattered along Paarl’s 12km main road, you’ll find immaculately preserved buildings showcasing Cape Dutch, Victorian, Edwardian, Georgian and Art Deco influences.

The Press Building, also known as the Dutch Renaissance Revival, is one of the most unique historic buildings on the walk - you can’t miss its distinct turrets and thatch roof.

Toringkerk, or “Tower Church” dates back to 1911 and is one of the most renowned buildings in Paarl. Its neo-Gothic grandeur is reflected in its architectural features such as it rose windows and 57m tall tower, one of the tallest in South Africa.

Protea Bioscope or Cinema is an Art Deco masterpiece. It dates back to 1939 and still houses some original artefacts, such as a 1927 Peerless Magnarc vintage cinema projector - rumor has it there’s also an original Volvo ad on film in the archives.

And for art lovers, the Hout Street Gallery, de Kraal Gallery and Gallery 88 are three of the more well-known of the town's many art galleries on the walking tour. The Jack Meyer Art Centre and Kate van Putten’s porcelain ceramic studio, located just off the main road, are also worth checking out.

One last historic building worth a mention is La Maison on Main, located just next door to the Het Gesticht museum, which dates back to the 1900s. Owners Mark and Loretta Alley transformed this hidden gem into one of the most charming boutique accommodation Paarl has to offer while still honoring its heritage. The results - breathtaking.

Before & After: Heritage House Gets a Modern Facelift | Main Road Paarl Cape Winelands

After doing a bit of research I found this rough diamond on the Main Road of Paarl next to the Hetgestict Museum. I could see the potential that this old heritage home had to offer with personality and character. The German family came back to me roughly 4 months later ready to sell. At this point, I was jumping up and down in front of my husband Mark until he said yes to my crazy passion for hospitality! We ended up buying the property end of 2020.

The property is approximately 1000 square meters and consists of a double-story building housing 2 apartments. We started the renovation on the 5th of January 2021. The property was dated back to the early 1900s, and it was time to go back to the bones of the home and make it more functional with a touch of modern design. The exterior of the home had potential and with Heritage Western Cape we couldn't touch the outside of the home too much, nor would we as it was the bones we fell in love with after all.

When we walked in through the front entrance the first thing that was noticeable was carpet throughout the 1st floor where the German family lived and old damaged wooden floors on the ground level as they had tenants in and out over the last 50 years.

We lifted sections of the carpeting to see what we had to work with as we really wanted to be able to keep the original wooden floor because it represents the history of the home. We then brought in a structural engineer to look at removing some walls and replacing all windows with floor-to-ceiling windows to bring in more natural light.

The contractors started by replacing all plumbing and electrical throughout the property. Walls were removed and structural work got going inside while the back yard was nonexistent with a slope towards the home, so we had to get levels in place and design the layout keeping the 8meter lap pool in mind we needed to add with privacy in mind.

As we wanted to keep the character of the property, we decided to do a white and grey marble tile on the floor to break up the wood tones. Off the entrance, it was important for me to have a space where guests could relax with a glass of wine in hand and just be. I am a big reader and wanted to add some characteristics to the property that reflected who we are as owners. So we did custom bookshelves in the mudroom to showcase the selection of books and just a tranquil space as you enter.

One of the best features of this living room is the original fireplace. We opened it up and added a cast iron unit to pronounce the space a bit. Removing the wall between the lounge and bathroom at the time to create a more open living space between the lounge and dining area also helped to create more square footage for the new kitchen.

The original floorplan had an eating area off the kitchen to the back of the house. It was its own space but wasn't open to the rest of the home and seemed small and dark hence us flipping the floor layout with the kitchen in the front and the family bathroom to the back. What we then did was to remove the scullery wall to create a 3rd bedroom instead and ended up extending the hallway and adding a back door to the ground floor unit leading to the private courtyard. The small area under the old staircase was enlarged to fit in a new guest toilet for easy access from the outside entertainment area.

In the kitchen, we added the same marble tile but on a bigger scale and went all white on the cabinets to complement the transition from old to new. As we had limited square footage, we opted not to put uppers everywhere and instead went for a more modern black metal display cabinet next to the kitchen window to create more of an airy feel.

This project was completed over a 10-month period and in the end, I would not change anything as the flow of the space we created works perfectly for long-stay holiday rentals. We cater to international guests wanting to book a holiday rental that they can call home year after year. We have been so blessed to have guests from all over staying with us and just enjoying the space we created as a family-friendly holiday destination.

We will be expanding our footprint in the hospitality industry by adding more properties to our portfolio. So, stay tuned to this channel for more renovations to follow.

2 – LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION

I cannot stress this enough. Yes, we want easy access to all the best locations, restaurants & tourist attractions around but do not want to pay R20 000 a night as a family of four when booking vacation rentals. How we get around this is to find the most central location that has all our day trip activities within 10 - 50km. Think of what is important to you like wine estates, restaurants, antique shops, art galleries, and fun activities for the kids. Then you place them out on a map and find a self catering holiday home on Airbnb that is perfectly located away from all the major cities but close enough (10-50km) for a day trip out.

3 – PRIVACY

To us as a family our privacy and quiet time are important. When we go out and about, we are between people 70% of the day but when we get home, we want quality time with our kids and just disconnect.

Will I have exclusive use of the property? Will there be any other guests using the facilities of the property? Will I have access to a maid on a daily base even if at an added charge?

These are important questions when we search for private holiday rentals on booking sites like Airbnb.

4 – FREEDOM, LUXURY & SPACE

Booking a self catering villa is all about having your own space and not having to share it with anyone. Complete freedom to do what works for you as a family. You have access to a fully equipped kitchen so that you can cook meals for your family on days you do not want to go out. 5 – DAY TRIPS WITH FLEXIBILITY OF LOCATION

We like to plan day trips so that each family member gets a WOW Day during our trip. So, things I would look at will be: do we have easy access to major roads like the N1. How long will the traveling time be going and coming back? I will then start planning the day trips as follow:

Day 1 will be close to home like Franschhoek & Helshoogte so that daddy can get his fix on local food & Wine (Tokara / Boschendal / Babylonstoren / Delaire Graff). For dinner, we would pick a local’s restaurant like Pappa Grappa on our way back to Paarl. The food is great and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the kids want to go back year after year.

Day 2 will be early morning surfing in Muizenburg at the Shurfshack Surfschool for the kids followed by lunch in Simon’s Town visiting the Penguin Colony with early dinner in Fish Hoek.

Day 3 will be a rest day where we can walk down the historical main road for lunch at Giovanni on Laborie Estate and dinner at Noop Restaurant on Main. Kids can enjoy the day in the pool and mommy get to catch up on some reading.

Day 4 will be driving to Constantia Uitsig for a fun-filled day at the Bike Park for the kids while Mark & myself can enjoy a quiet table at the famous Blockhouse Kitchen for lunch. Take a slow drive back via the V&A Waterfront for dinner.

Day 5 will be a day out in nature, so we go hiking up Paarl Rock and end of the afternoon on a quad bike trail at Rhebokskloof.

Yes, we have some of the most amazing tourist attractions around us but visiting the local spots makes the trip so much more special. As you go back year after year, you will be greeted by your first name and feel accepted into the “local family” if I can call it that.

To make all of this possible for our guests we created La Maison On Main that’s located on the Main Road of Paarl in a 1900’s home that’s a prime location and walking distance to restaurants and shops. It is private and has all the trimmings a family will need while on holiday.
